Seasonal Staff Department / Job Descriptions

Below you will find the descriptions of Omega's departments. Please note that while you will be hired into a specific department you may be asked to work in other departments such as housekeeping and dishwashing when needed.

Bookstore sells books, jewelry, clothing, yoga and meditation supplies. Bookstore staff is responsible for running the cash register, assisting participants, restocking shelves and cleaning. Bookstore staffing hours are usually split to accommodate participant workshop schedules.

Café is a full service operation with espresso and juice bar as well as a full menu. Seasonal staff fills positions as line cooks and counter persons. Responsibilities include cash register; making smoothies, coffee, espresso drinks, fruit and vegetable juices; serving food; dish washing and line cook. Café hours are 6am-12am.

Campus Support manages the arrival and departures of catalog participants every week and weekend. Seasonal staff fill mainly part-time positions checking participants into the parking lot, tagging and moving luggage and patrolling the campus at night. Campus Support also performs Lot Attendant duties throughout the week - each of these shifts is 3 hours long. The bulk of Campus Support responsibilities happen during a 12-hour shift on Fridays and Sundays. Late nights, long days and early morning hours are an integral part of Campus Support and staff need to be physically strong, detail oriented and outgoing. Excellent communication skills are a must!

Children's Program creates summer camp experiences for the children (ages 4-12 yrs) of the catalog participants. Activities such as sports, swimming and outdoor adventures are planned weekly depending on the number and ages of the children. Seasonal staff plans and supervises all activities. The Children's Program is open when participants are in workshop: 9 am-12 pm, 2:30-5pm, 7 days a week. When parents' workshops have extended hours, the Children's Program is open evening and some early morning hours. When attendance is low in the Children's Program, staff are asked to work in other departments.

Dining Hall serves all of the meals and maintains the Main Dining Room, Faculty Dining Room and the Staff Dining room. Seasonal staff is responsible for the set up and breakdown (clean up) of each meal. Dining Hall staff will also serve food from the Kitchen to the buffet lines and keep all other stations fully stocked and clean during all three meals. Work shifts can start as early as 5:30am and can end as late as 11 pm.

First Aid serves the catalog participants and seasonal staff. They provide minimal first aid intervention and are the first to respond in emergency situations. Seasonal staff with current CPR and First Aid certification fills these positions; other experience in health care is helpful. Responsibilities include knowledge of first aid and first responder protocol. First Aid hours are 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. First Aid staff take turns being on radio for 24 hour shifts.

Floats support all the departments at Omega. They offer additional weekly support to the Dining Hall, Housekeeping, Campus Support and the Café. They also support other departments that are short staffed, working on special projects, such as preparing for a conference, etc. Floating can be very rewarding because of the variety. Staff need to be flexible, independent, in good physical shape, willing to work wherever, adaptive and able to step into any department and become part of a team. Work hours are Monday-Sunday 6am-1am. Shifts are 2 hours to 8 ½ hours a day and may be split shifts.

Garden maintains the main garden and all flower beds and potted plants throughout the campus. Seasonal staff responsibilities including weeding, planting, transplanting, harvesting, watering, and end of season shut down. Work hours are Monday through Friday 7am-3pm. Garden staff often work in other departments when it rains and/or the garden work is complete.

Guest Services operates as a front desk in a hotel. This department serves participants, faculty and staff. It handles participant housing, directions and travel questions, off-campus activities and restaurants, complaints, special needs, First Aid support, babysitting coordination, campus visitors, art sales, participant and staff phone messages and mail, all mail deliveries to and from the campus, and acts as the connection point for participants, faculty, faculty assistants and staff. This is a very information dense department. Seasonal staff fills positions as Assistant Manager, Special Needs Coordinator, Front desk staff and Mail coordinator. Office hours are 7 am- 12am daily.

Housekeeping cleans every participant housing unit and bathroom on the campus. Busiest days are Fridays and Sundays when participants are departing and arriving. Seasonal staff responsibilities include answering radio calls, cleaning, vacuuming, laundry sorting, and restocking. Department hours are 6am-11:30pm, seven days a week.

Kitchen is a large full-scale food production facility. They produce up to 1500 vegetarian and vegan meals per day as well as breads and desserts for both the Dining Hall and Café. Seasonal staff fills positions as sous chefs, prep cooks, breakfast cooks, salad bar, baker and pastry chef. Hours of operation are 5am-10pm, seven days a week.

Library is a non-lending library. It contains books and audio files on many different spiritual traditions and holistic health related topics. Seasonal staff fills librarian positions with responsibilities such as greeting and assisting patrons, screening and cataloging donations and managing some sales. Hours of operation are seven days a week, 9am-11pm.

Lifeguards work at the lake front from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Seasonal staff must have current lifeguard certification plus the water front module training. Responsibilities include maintaining safety of all who use the beach, conducting swim tests for children, and keeping the beach clean. The beach is open seven days a week from 10 am- 7pm.

Maintenance handles most of the minor plumbing and mechanical needs of the campus as well as basic maintenance of building and trailers. Responsibilities include answering radio calls, understanding basic maintenance, carpentry and plumbing and the ability to make repairs. Department hours are seven days a week, 24 hours/day.

Media Works services all of the audio and visual needs of the Rhinebeck campus and Omega Conferences. Media Works is also a retail operation with a store on campus and an on-line store. Seasonal staff positions include: audio/visual technicians (stage set-up, mixing), audio and videotape tape operators, digital audio and video editing (Protools, Final Cut, Adobe Premiere), web-store and office administration (MYSQL, Flash, Photoshop, MS Office, etc). Responsibilities include public speaking, operation of audio and video equipment, product duplication and packaging, and retail/customer service. Department hours are 8am-11pm, seven days/week.

People and Culture Department hires, orients and manages the seasonal staff. It also creates the staff educational programs, which are a part of the compensation package for seasonal staff. Seasonal staff fills positions as administrative assistant, program coordinator, faculty support and art's building coordinator. Responsibilities include recruitment, orientations, mediation, database management, staff communications, faculty hosting, programming, creation of work contracts, etc. Department hours are seven days a week, 9am-5pm.

Production is the department responsible for the set-up and breakdown for every catalog workshop and staff class as well as hosting the catalog faculty while on campus. Seasonal staff fills positions on crew, faculty support, and administration. Responsibilities include cleaning, set-up and breakdown of classrooms, ordering and keeping track of all supplies and equipment for the various workshops, travel arrangements for all faculty and their assistants and other administrative tasks. Department hours are seven days a week from 7am-12am.

Reception greets, orients and checks in all arriving catalog participant on Fridays and Sundays. We are currently looking for full-time and part-time seasonal staff to fill positions as office staff. Responsibilities and required skills include switchboard coverage, customer service, billing and housing information, office administrative tasks (copying, filing, faxing, mailings), and computer skills. Office hours are seven days a week 8am-5pm and 8am-9pm on arrival days.

Wellness Center is our campus spa, offering massage, shamanic healing, astrology readings, network chiropractic, facials, shiatsu and various other modalities. Seasonal staff fills positions as front desk staff. Responsibilities include customer service, explaining modalities to patrons, booking appointments, cash register, credit card machine, putting away linens, interfacing with wellness practitioners and answering the phone.
